About Us

The Bay Horse Inn, Heighington

Where History Meets Warm Hospitality

Steeped in history and rich with character, The Bay Horse Inn in Heighington has been a cornerstone of village life for centuries. Believed to date back to the late 17th or early 18th century, the inn shares its origins with other notable village landmarks such as the Manor House on East Green. Located on West Green, The Bay Horse proudly stands as a Grade II listed building, recognised by Historic England for its architectural and historical importance.

From the moment you step through our doors, you’ll be transported into the charm of a traditional English pub. The Bay Horse retains many of its original features, exposed oak beams, stone walls, and a classic through-passage plan — evoking the craftsmanship and spirit of a bygone era. During the colder months, the roaring open fire creates a cosy, welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit feel like a homecoming.

While our history is long and proud, we’re also excited about the present. Following a stunning refurbishment completed in November 2025, The Bay Horse has been beautifully refreshed while preserving its timeless character. The renovations have breathed new life into our dining areas, enhancing comfort and style while maintaining the warmth and authenticity that guests have always loved.

Our famous Carvery Dinners, served every Sunday are a true celebration of freshness and flavour. At the bar, you’ll find an impressive selection of award-winning beers and wines, as well as a carefully curated range of fine malt whiskies for those who appreciate the finer things.

Our culinary team has crafted a menu that perfectly balances classic pub favourites with modern seasonal dishes, ensuring there’s something to delight every palate. Whether you’re joining us for a hearty meal, a light bite, or simply a relaxed drink by the fire, you’ll find yourself at home here.

For generations, The Bay Horse has been a beloved hub for the Heighington community — a place where neighbours gather, friends reunite, and visitors are welcomed like family. Rooted in a village with origins dating back to around 400 AD, our pub continues to uphold the traditions of hospitality and togetherness that define this historic corner of County Durham.

Given our popularity and intimate setting, we highly recommend booking in advance to secure your table.

Tony, Diane, and the team look forward to welcoming you to The Bay Horse, Heighington — where centuries of tradition meet modern comfort, and every visit is a celebration of good food, great drinks, and even better company.

LOCAL AREA

Heighington Village

Heighington Village has a rich history, with evidence suggesting that a settlement has existed there since around 400 AD. The name "Heighington" likely has Anglo-Saxon origins, indicating the village's long-standing presence in the region.

The village is noted in the Boldon Book of 1183, the northern equivalent of the Domesday Book. This historical record emphasizes Heighington's significance during that period.

For many years, the village's life revolved around the village green. A wall and gate once enclosed this central area, providing protection for the residents and their grazing animals, highlighting the village's focus on community safety and agricultural practices.
